Waterman's Harbor, Dana Point, CA

Waterman's Harbor Restaurant Review

:
About the restaurant & décor: Tucked right along Dana Point’s sparkling harbor, this unpretentious two-story venue captures the essence of the South OC city’s criminally underrated waterfront. The wooden deck-like outdoor patio is an inviting space to watch seafaring vessels flitter about the jetty, particularly with a glass of wine or beer or a craft cocktail in hand. The interior’s large bay windows and nuanced nautical décor do a solid job of bringing the adjacent shoreline’s vibe inside.

Food & Drinks: The ambience sets the stage for executive chef Manny Gonzalez’ skillful take on classic and forward-thinking seafood dishes, many of which are made with locally sourced sustainable ingredients. Starters like the fried calamari Provencale with tomato, garlic and beurre blanc display his ability to add uncommon depth to traditional dishes, while the Japanese hamachi with pickled shallots, pine nuts and dried currants delivers freshness that connects to the environment. Mains feature a quartet of fresh catch options prepared in three different styles, highlighted by the pan-roasted iteration. Herb-crusted swordfish is also rather good, and the loaded cioppino is ideal for a blustery day. There are steaks and chops available for landlubbers, too. Be sure to save room for the cheesecake stuffed beignets for dessert.
