Fashioned with a chic metropolitan vibe born from brick walls, dark furniture and a lively bar, the small, two-story Watermarc stands out from the surrounding mélange of galleries and boutiques that dominate downtown Laguna Beach. Chef/partner Marc Cohen uses this backdrop to deliver the type of culinary panache that has proven successful in his other dining venues, 230 Forest and Opah. Groups of friends may look to delve into the large section of tapas-style “grazing plates,” highlighted by the Spanish octopus with marble potatoes and the fried goat cheese with apples and honey. Classically prepared filet three-ways and the cedar-planked Scottish salmon offer 21st-century takes on traditional favorites. Post-dinner, go for the s'more pot de crème or the white chocolate and macadamia nut bread pudding. In addition to a modest yet solid wine list, the downstairs bar offers several inventive options to accompany the weekend breakfast offerings, or for a nightcap.
