Overlooking the town square, this chic eatery is a welcome dining option in charming but sleepy Sierra Madre. From the owners of the South Pasadena bistro Mike & Anne’s, Wistaria is unexpectedly stylish but consistent with Sierra Madre’s embracing attitude. A minimalist contemporary space is warmed with wood and vintage lighting, as locals huddle at candlelit tables or crowd an adjoining bar. Starters from the eclectic menu range include gazpacho, arancini with parsley pesto, and fish ‘n’ chips made with Dover sole. A pub influence continues into main courses with shepherd’s pie, but there’s also hanger steak with pink peppercorn cream and a sophisticated pan-roasted striped bass in a miso broth. A very respectable burger offers casual diners a go-to option, perhaps with a side of mac ‘n’ cheese lightly dusted with Parmesan bread crumbs. The international wine list is brief and moderately priced, and desserts include crème brûlée and a light, silky butterscotch pudding.
