Yum Cha fills a distinct void on Kauai with refined Asian food that doesn't break the bank. You can happily make a full meal of appetizers, especially the Korean crab pancake, sesame shrimp toasts and roasted duck bao. The hot-and-sour soup is thick with chicken and shiitake mushrooms, while the sweet-tangy Mandarin chicken salad is a meal in itself. Fried rice is enlivened with the addition of teriyaki salmon, and the tempura vegetables are crisp and light. The “spoon-tender” short ribs live up to their name, while the steamed whole mullet is flaky and moist. Some items can be prepared gluten-free. For those who prefer more potent libations than tea, Yum Cha offers a full bar --- including fruity martinis --- and a modest though interesting wine and saké list, with most selections also available by the glass. The spacious dining room, with windows looking out on manicured golf greens, is both smart and comfortable.
