Like many Key West eateries, this one opens out onto the street, letting the outdoors in, and allowing the indoor scene to overflow onto the sidewalk. But unlike the average Key West restaurant, American Bar & Grill is cosmopolitan. However, you probably won’t find a better meal for these prices anywhere on the island, with appetizers starting at $6, and no entrée exceeding $29 on the menu. The emphasis on seafood and Mediterranean cuisine (predominantly Greek) is a nice change, particularly if you’ve been on the island a while and have had it with conch everything and overpriced, mediocre seafood served on plastic. We recommend the mussels fra diavolo and pecan-crusted goat cheese as starters. Try the grilled short rack of lamb with rosemary or garlicky, grilled Sicilian-style grouper. A light menu of tapas and salads is served from 3 p.m.-5 p.m. daily. There’s a pianist most nights.
