We feel the Original Antone’s Import Co. on Taft is the place to grab a Houston lunchtime institution, the Antone’s poorboy. Open from 8:00 in the morning until 6:30 at night, pop in at any time to pick up a pre-wrapped, color coded sandwich to go. With ten kinds to choose from, all served on the distinctive Antone’s roll, we place the smoked turkey with slices of smoked cheddar and the regular with layers of ham, salami, provolone and chow chow relish, among our favorites. Or try the piggy, a ham/salami mousse with jalapeño cheese, a spicy delight. Vegetarians opt for the tasty nature boy with tabouli and feta cheese and the falafel poorboy. For dessert there are brownies, cheesecake and easy to eat fruit pies. Though we do prefer this landmark on the edge of downtown, there is a consistent freshness and quality to all the Antone’s outposts.
