Olive Boulevard is the heart of Asian dining in St. Louis. “Asian” used to mean Chinese, but Korean restaurants like Asian Kitchen are encouraging diners to diversify. The staff does its best to introduce customers unfamiliar with the cuisine to bulgogi (barbecue) of beef, pork or shrimp, or bim bim bap, a rice bowl full of vegetables and meat. Diners with more experience with the food usually move on to hot pots, noodles or seafood selections. Everything is served with banchan---a myriad of condiments in small bowls, which are shared by the whole table. This is where kimchi, fermented, spicy cabbage, makes its appearance, often accompanied by spinach, mushrooms, and other marinated or pickled vegetables. There’s a selection of Korean beers and soju, the strong, (usually) grain-based Korean national drink.
