| Ever since it opened in the 1970s, Au Coquelet has been an airy, comfortable and super-convenient hangout for Berkeley denizens of all stripes. Mere blocks from the university campus and the nearest subway station, it offers the extra benefit, all too rare hereabouts, of serving full meals well into the wee hours. Business and government types mix with activists, students, cops and regular folks, some enjoying the high windows looking out onto University Avenue from the café proper and others tucking into freshly cooked, internationally inspired meals in a soaring-ceilinged dining room out back. Café and restaurant menus run the gamut from eggs Benedict to pizza to cappuccino to burgers to burritos to heftily heavenly brownies. Au Coquelet's creative cocktails and house-baked pastries are among Berkeley's best-kept secrets, but deserve to be applauded far and wide. |
