Chef-owner Seth Woods takes the pulse of Boston diners more accurately than most. First at Metropolis, then Aquitaine, he has shown he understands what folks want---sometimes before they know themselves. With Union Bar & Grille, he was first to answer SoWa’s need for upscale neighborhood joints. The design is sleek enough for local A-listers but comfy enough for regulars, resting mostly on smart touches like black leather banquettes and spare flower arrangements. The menu possesses a similar combination of knowing cool and homey warmth; unexpectedly, sandwiches in particular are delish---the cheeseburger’s jacked up with andouille sausage, and the juicy Reuben’s slathered with caper mustard. Better yet, it all starts with moist skillet cornbread. And best of all, now that the area is rife with restaurants, Union has again opted to lead the pack with a lowered price point; entrées rarely exceed the mid-twenties.
