Woody's Famous Philadelphia Cheesesteaks Restaurant Review:

Anchoring the corner of Virginia Avenue and Monroe Drive since 1975 and through two owners, Woody's is about as simple a spot as one could find. A screened-in porch and a rickety-looking wooden structure with limited interior seating and only twirling ceiling fans for comfort on a hot day, the restaurant maintains its reputation for its Philly cheesesteak, for which sautéed onions are a must in our view. But we find the bread less crusty than we desire and the flavor not quite up to par. So we like to stick with the hot dogs and polish sausage, reserving the sautéed onions for the latter. Italian sausages are another of our preferred treats. The place is popular for late noshing, as late as 4 a.m. on weekends. As there’s a high school right across the street, Woody's gets jammed at lunch, too. A very tasty milkshake is a good quaff to go with any of these items. There's PBR for those who just must go for retro suds. Sweetwater, a local brewer, on tap is a better idea. No restrooms.
