Barrelhouse 101 Restaurant Review

: There are places for eating and places for drinking. On a good day, this is a place for both. Inconsistency has become an issue, though, since the 2012 opening, and at times the 101 gleaming beer taps outshine the food at Barrelhouse 101. But it isn’t always like that. Proprietor Joby Yobe incorporates a similar yet more consistent formula at his nearby Ojai Beverage Company: quality fare bolsters an ample selection of booze --- the main draw for most patrons. Crisp salads, Angus burgers and pasta dishes are reliable and well executed. A spicy catfish po’ boy offers a nice textural contrast of crisp batter and soft bun. The service and atmosphere are more pub-caliber than restaurant, but attractive presentations reveal that there is more to Barrelhouse than beer and pub grub. In addition to usual suspects like a tri-tip sandwich you’ll find tender manila clams, simmered in a rich, herby broth. A giant chocolate chip cookie topped with vanilla whipped cream is the star of the dessert menu. Expect a crowd around happy hour and on weekends.
