| Despite the fairly austere setting and haphazard, often slow service, Beach Grass Café produces some seriously tasty food. Breakfast is packed, especially on the weekends, but for good reason as the chilaquiles, scrambled eggs and corn tortillas in homemade red-chili sauce with shavings of Asiago cheese, are first-rate. Dive into a plate of upside-down pineapple pancakes or try the truly unique creamy risotto under a burnt sugar crust with orange essence. This may be the only place in San Diego County that offers Hangtown Fry, a Gold Rush-era classic of fried, breaded oysters scrambled with eggs, bacon and Parmesan. The lunch and dinner menus are equally appealing, and also gently priced. At midday, we recommend the thick clam-packed chowder or the crab cake salad. On the dinner front, savory creativity continues to shine with the Kailua pork tostados, spiced up with a cilantro-jalapeño cream sauce. The ribs are exceptionally flavorful in a house-made barbecue sauce. Monday and Tuesdays means half-off on bottles of wine, and while the list is minimal, a few decent sippers can be found. |
