Located on Milwaukee's East Side, this brightly lit restaurant attracts a hip crowd of health-conscious diners. The menu, which is mostly locally sourced, relies heavily on whole-grain and vegetable offerings, including the expected veggie burgers and steamed vegetables as well as more creative Southwestern and Indian-influenced salads and entrées. But there are some meat dishes for those who don’t like to go without, including Cajun grilled chicken, tuna salad, baked turkey and chicken quesadillas. The soups are all made with homemade stocks, and the vegetarian chili is a local favorite. Juices and smoothies, from orange to chocolate-banana, are equally fresh and flavorful.

Beans and Barley

I am a big fan of Beans and Barley. No longer being able to eat there on a regular basis, is one of the reasons I miss living on the Eastside of Milwuakee.

I love their burritos, especially their chicken burrito, but when the mood strikes, and I'm up for some vegetarian fare, their works burrito or super burrito are outstanding.

The sandwiches, without exception, are fresh and tasty, however, given the price, not as generous in size as I would like.

The general feel for the restaurant is always pleasant with large windows, good sunlight and a very pleasant staff.
