Despite the fact that the owner has a non-Italian-sounding name (Harry Stephens), he really is from a big Italian family in upstate New York. For the money, Bella Luna's pastas and sauces are decent, and the approachability level is high. There's comfort food like mashed potatoes and lasagna and big plates of veal saltimbocca (also served Parmesan, Marsala or piccata-style). The restaurant reinvents its menu every six weeks, focusing on one region of Italy to showcase seasonal ingredients and flavors and techniques unique to that area. There's live music every weekend and half-price wines on Wednesday nights, too, which helps bring in a crowd. Stephens, a wine connoisseur, personally selects wines for the restaurant's extensive wine list and offers wine flights or even a "mystery wine bucket." But, to be honest, you could go home happy if you skipped everything else and just came for the bread pudding with amaretto butter sauce. There are seasonal versions --- from pumpkin to dark chocolate chip. Bella Luna even takes orders for bread pudding by the pan.
