THIS ESTABLISHMENT IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED The large windows fronting onto Davies Street welcome you into a spacious restaurant, which instantly soothes with its softly coloured décor and contemporary artwork on the walls. The cooking, which follows the modern European mode, is extremely accomplished, with the freshest ingredients allowed to shine through. Chef Steven Black has earned a reputation for his skill and straightforward approach. Seared scallops and foie gras with cepe mushrooms and pea and mint purée makes a fine starter, followed, perhaps, by steamed halibut fillet with chantenay carrots, beetroot and cabbage, in an oyster and cucumber velouté, or a caramelised supreme of Gressingham duck which comes with a quince spring roll, wild mushrooms, fig Madeira and honey dressing. Ingredients are mixed with care and skill. Desserts might include Valrhona chocolate fondant with lavender ice cream. The set lunch of three courses for £21.95 is a steal.
