Black Trumpet Restaurant Review: Black Trumpet is housed in a century-old Victorian close enough to the Atlantic to hear the rolling surf and smell the salty air. Chef-owner Mark Mikolajczyk is a creative talent who likes to surprise with clever presentations. Order the red beet salad and delight in the thin-sliced red beets topped with baby arugula and grilled corn, peaches, goat cheese and toasted hazelnuts. The accent on seafood results in entrée offerings such as day boat scallops from the nearby Manasquan Inlet served over a purple potato-rock shrimp hash and edamame, finished with a saffron aïoli. A variety of desserts are crafted daily. Service is polished and professional, if somewhat harried on busy summer weekends when the house is inevitably full. When the day is cloudless, opt for dining al fresco on the wraparound porch.
