THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Cafe Mandolin Restaurant Review

: As gentle as its background mandolin music, this pretty restaurant with its clean and uncluttered lines and soft desert-tone colors makes a perfect showcase for the equally delicate and attractive foods cooked by chef-owner Nancy Cohen. Lunch entrées focus on tempting salads and sandwiches, such as the vegetarian Cuban sandwich with crispy tofu or the meatier offering, the Santa Fe steak sandwich with roasted red pepper and jalapeño cream cheese. Dinners make more of a full statement with such starters as the house crab bisque or seared sea scallops with cilantro and ginger pesto; move on to ginger beef with vegetables on rice noodles or macadamia-crusted mahi-mahi with red grapefruit glaze. While the main menu shows its Caribbean and Asian influences, the desserts are pure classics. Don’t skip the wickedly caloric chocolate pâté with crème anglaise, almost too rich to finish but too good to abandon. Note: Because of its open design, the restaurant kitchen is on view to most of the patrons; if you wish, you can even sit at the counter overlooking Cohen’s workspace.
