There’s now more of Café Ventana to love. The annex next door lets more Saint Louis University students spread out their books and study, more telecommuters hook up their laptops, and more moms park strollers for a leisurely klatsch. Chef Chris Lee’s ambitious kitchen turns out three meals a day, plus snacks and a late-night menu. Along with the first-rate coffee, Café Ventana also offers wine, beer and signature cocktails so good they’re a draw on their own. The restaurant promotes itself as a New Orleans bistro, and it has the beignets to back up the claim. The order-at-the-counter lunch tends to be busy, but not chaotically so. Though the short menu doesn’t break much new ground, items frequently riff on a familiar dish, like the Cuban sandwich served as a wrap. Cakes, pies, chocolates and pastries are available, but it’s hard to bypass those beignets.
