Caffe Nonna Restaurant Review: Caffe Nonna has done a brisk business for years serving up pasta and other Italian comfort dishes in a relaxed, intimate ambience. The magic behind the menu was born in the well-worn recipe box of chef Daniel Maggipinto's grandmother --- she’s also the namesake of this beloved neighborhood haunt. If you can't decide between the veal roulade stuffed with ricotta, pancetta and basil and the house lasagna with a surprise layer of butternut squash, craft your own dish from the list of pastas, sauces and toppings. The basilica sauce of tomatoes and tender onions in white wine is a standout, as is the spicy arrabbiata. Try one of the artisan pizzas as well. For dessert, the house-made gelato is usually your best bet. With just under 40 seats in the small, rustic space, reservations are a good idea. The wine list, with both Italian and Californian selections, is affordable, and many bottles are available by the glass, too. |
