California Market Restaurant Review: California Market's coveted patio seats overlook Big Sur’s coast, where pine- and redwood-covered hillsides descend toward waves crashing onto rocky shores. Insiders know to request a pair of binoculars and some of the waitstaff can help sight whales in season. As for the food, for starters, we like the Dungeness crab cakes set off by creamy avocado relish and a spicy rémoulade. All the salads are big enough to share; the salty-sweet Point Reyes blue cheese with candied walnuts is a celebration of texture and flavor. Although the simple pleasures of a gourmet grilled cheese beckon, go for the halibut sandwich, with its own spicy rémoulade and a side of crispy french fries. For a real splurge, try the cioppino. Save room for the chocolate mousse cake that almost --- but just almost --- rivals the view. The hotel is undergoing major renovations, but says it will do them in stages to accommodate guests' needs. Just to be safe, call ahead to see what's open.
