California Market Restaurant Review: California Market's coveted patio seats overlook Big Sur’s coast, where pine- and redwood-covered hillsides descend toward waves crashing onto rocky shores. Insiders know to request a pair of binoculars and some of the waitstaff can help sight whales in season. As to the food, for starters, we like the Dungeness crab cakes set off by creamy avocado relish and a spicy rémoulade. All the salads are big enough to share; the salty-sweet Point Reyes blue cheese with candied walnuts is a celebration of texture and flavor. Although the simple pleasures of a gourmet grilled cheese beckon, go for the halibut sandwich, with its own spicy rémoulade and a side of crispy french fries. For a real splurge, try the cioppino. Save room for the chocolate mousse cake that almost --- but just almost --- rivals the view. Note: Starting spring 2016, California Market will be the dinner spot at Hyatt Carmel Highlands as Pacific's Edge closes for renovation.
