 California Market Restaurant Review: California Market's coveted patio seats overlook the grandeur of the Big Sur’s coast, where pine- and redwood-covered hillsides descend toward waves crashing onto rocky shores. You can start the day with a Point Lobos omelet, featuring avocado and Dungeness crab, or smoked salmon on a bagel. At lunch, let the ocean be your muse; on our visit, we began with clam chowder that was creamy, flavorful and full of tender bits of clam. We munched on crispy crab and lobster rolls plated with a bold sweet-and-sour wakame seaweed salad. A juicy swordfish sandwich, one of several sandwiches on the menu, arrived with piping hot, crispy french fries. An assortment of entrée-size salads includes chicken, ahi and Caesar options. For a real splurge, try the cioppino --- savory seafood stew with mussels, scallops and local fish. Save room for the chocolate mousse cake that almost --- but just almost --- rivals the view. |
