It may be on the Eastside, but it's worth the trip when Portlanders crave genuine Texas-style barbecue. While it's down-home and casual, don't let the basic trappings deter you: paper napkins, plastic glasses, and the lack of a full bar. After all, you're here for the barbecue. Meat choices range from smoked turkey to beef, pork ribs, elk, venison and tender, low-fat organic buffalo brisket. Turkey is actually one of the best choices. The heat level --- as in seasoning --- is calibrated as requested with four sauces ranging from smoky brown sugar to fiery hot. Sides are traditional, such as beans, black-eyed peas, mac ‘n’ cheese and yams, but do not measure up to the carnivorous offerings. An outdoor dining area that seats 50 provides a pleasant spot to eat a plate of wood-smoked ’cue.
