Cantina La Mexicana Restaurant Review: This no-frills Union Square Mexican restaurant offers a sizeable menu that includes items not seen elsewhere in Boston, be it gordas grandes (cornmeal pancakes topped with refried beans and cheese) or bocoles y camarones (corncakes filled with refried beans, queso and avocado served with shrimp on the side). Fiery fare is available, too, like chiles rellenos with your choice of chicken, beef, pork or shrimp. And who can resist the made-to-order guacamole loaded with onion, lemon, cilantro and chiles? Or perhaps try the queso fundido, a warm cheese fondue of chile verde, chorizo and onions that’s ideal for sharing. Tamales are plump and flavorful, with braised chicken or pork. Attentive servers work the expanded dining room.
