Caracol Restaurant Review:

Restaurateur Tracy Vaught and her husband, chef Hugo Ortega, have struck gold once again with this concept: a glamorous Mexican Gulf Coast seafood eatery in the Galleria area. Bright and airy with a modern décor infused with giant paintings by Charley Harper of underwater creatures, Caracol recalls a trip to a Mexican beach town, both in mood and taste. Start with the wood-roasted Gulf oysters dripping with chipotle butter and the conch (caracol) ceviche. And maybe some of the antojitos, starters based on Mexican street food, like the crispy, rolled pork tacos. Of course, the real star is the fresh seafood: whole, grilled catch of the day; roasted lobster tails; and sautéed shrimp in a spicy morita pepper sauce. Sides include garlic mushrooms and some tasty charred Brussels sprouts. Pair the sangría of the day or a spicy cocktail with your meal. The bar offers tequila flights and some notable wines while Ortega’s brother Ruben does daily desserts. Or, come by for seafood at the lovely Sunday brunch.
