Casa de Soria Restaurant Review

: Casa de Soria has been on the short list of locals’ favorite Mexican eateries in Ventura for more than a half century. Located in midtown, a couple blocks off Main Street, the beloved establishment receives little walk-in business; this is a destination restaurant, albeit far from fancy. Patrons come from Ventura and surrounding communities for the warm familiarity, hot homemade chips and icy margaritas. Hearty standards like chile rellenos and carne asada plates are popular, but you’ll also find seafood such as grilled shrimp. Rice and beans are a given. And though beans typically don’t rate a mention, the refried pintos here have a cult following. Deceptively dry, even crispy, on the outside, they give way to a moist and flavorful center. Rapid-fire team service keeps things moving at a nice clip. For a salty, sour, spicy treat that’s not on the menu, ask your server for a side of pan-fried jalapeño peppers, cooked with a squeeze of lemon. Cool down with fried ice cream or house-made flan, the restaurant’s two most popular desserts.
