Chapter One: The Modern Local Restaurant Review: Set in a converted bookstore in the heart of the burgeoning Artist’s Village section of downtown Santa Ana, Chapter One: The Modern Local radiates a cool, metropolitan style that’s rarely found in Orange County. Executive chef Oge Dalken draws from his native Detroit roots and two decades of fine dining culinary experience to create a gastropub-style menu that infuses traditional dishes with a sense of uniquely contemporary flair, all prepared with a strong adherence to local, sustainable sensibilities. This marriage establishes itself through appetizers such as ground turkey-wrapped Scotch egg served with an Asian mustard-mango sauce, and smoked salmon jerked nachos. Entrées ranging from the tomato relish and Parmesan crisp-topped Italian burger with portobello mushroom to bacon-wrapped beef culotte dredged in ground coffee beans and cocoa further demonstrate the fusion between familiar and forward. Dessert offerings like the vanilla panna cotta and Cinnamon Toast Crunch ice cream add an ideal touch of whimsy to the proceedings. The venue’s extended hours and well-stocked bar of artisan libations also make it an ideal place to chill out after a long day.
