| Just a few steps down from Chez Papa Bistrot is the ultra-petite Chez Maman. The narrow restaurant is aglow in tangerine and orange sherbet hues, and a long counter provides most of the seating (there are two small tables near the window). A very San Francisco house-music soundtrack slinks down from the high ceiling and easygoing French conversation bubbles up all over the place, a pleasant hum that makes it easy to get lost watching the cooks composing the house version of salade Niçoise or grilling croque monsieurs. Chez Maman does a notable hamburger topped with a choice of Roquefort, Brie or goat cheese. More sophisticated dishes, with sophisticated prices, round out the menu. Try the mussels, which arrive steaming marinière-style, or the moist pan-seared sea bass. |
