It’s all credit to the spiky one---despite yet more TV & getting the Rhodes & Co brasserie concept on the road, his flagship enterprise remains stellar with sublime, sophisticated British cuisine given a modern spin, and well-informed, exemplary staff who seem more than content to work for our Gary in absentia. Twice-baked truffle soufflé lifted a creamy celeriac soup into the realm of something thrilling. Both delicately flavoured poached loin of lamb with foie gras and shallot Tatin, and a delectably tender partridge on foie gras toast (no stinting on luxury ingredients here) were perfectly executed with no unnecessary adornments. Puddings are extremely fine: dark chocolate soufflé and warm lemon pudding with raspberries provoked raptures. A carefully constructed wine list and a considerate sommelier add to the pleasures. Only the rather soulless modern décor of the obscurely located first-floor dining room, which already seems dated, disappoints---especially for lingering evening visits. More a venue for larger groups and lunchtime meets.
