| Local institution Cleburne’s is a family enterprise that opened in the 1940s and is beloved for its huge portions and wide variety of fresh Southern comfort food. The bright interior, with black-and-white period photos and warm wood and brass accents, is definitely a step up from the Luby’s chain, and it attracts close-by West University families. Country favorites like roast beef, chicken-fried steak, liver and onions and fried fish are joined on the line with homemade Greek fare, like pastitsio and moussaka, thanks to the native land of the owners. Other daily specials may include chicken and dumplings, corn beef and cabbage or salmon patties. Don't forget to eat your vegetables, especially the sweet, cracker-topped version of yellow squash casserole and the country collard greens. For a real treat, we never pass up this version of America's favorite comfort food---macaroni and cheese---loaded with cheddar cheese. |
