Cleburne Cafeteria Restaurant Review

: Cleburne Cafeteria is a Houston tradition, starting out on Cleburne Street in 1941 before moving to its current West University Place location in 1969. Its diners are second- and third-generation customers who like the American comfort food dished up on the line. Greek-born Nick Mickelis built the eatery into an institution, but he was always an artist at heart and his paintings still hang on the walls. His children run the restaurant today, but the tradition of homey food remains. Check out the blackboard specials that often include dishes such as chicken-fried chicken and mashed potatoes, fried catfish and hushpuppies, turkey and dressing or chicken potpie. Always on the menu is the old-school liver-and-onions but vegetables get their due as well with baked corn and black-eyed peas. Save room for pie: apple, chocolate ice box, cherry and lemon chess.
