A spacious, modern setting lets diners forget the word “urban” and concentrate on the word “wine.”

On crowded Washington Avenue, Copia stands out for having copious street frontage, including both the restaurant and adjacent wine market. Moreover, the space extends all the way to the other side of the block, starting with a modern bar at the entrance, through dining areas to a very large all-seasons patio that makes up the rear half of the restaurant. Given all that, you might think real estate costs would drive up prices, but Copia will surprise you. Wines are priced at retail (thanks to the adjacent market) and carry an $8 corkage fee. At lunch, office workers fill the patio, dining on spicy mango-chicken grilled pizza, a sirloin skillet burger or a salad of flash-fried calamari. Dinner leans toward steakhouse fare---tenderloin, prime rib, surf ‘n’ turf---rounded out with entrées like chicken lasagna with portobellos, spinach and garlic three-cheese cream. Catching a glimpse of desserts like cheesecake with seasonal fruit will give you extra motivation to save room. The cheerful, efficient servers know the menu well (though they sometimes need to check on the availability of wines in the market).
