The Cracked Conch Cafe Restaurant Review: Though protected locally and currently imported from the Turks and Caicos or the Bahamas, conch is still “native” Keys cuisine. Conch is a versatile, lean-protein meat, but few places experiment with its possibilities --- certainly nowhere as thoroughly as this place. In addition to the usual fritters, ceviche and chowder, The Cracked Conch dishes out conch-and-eggs for breakfast, conch picatta, conch Marsala, and a conch melt…to name but a few dishes. They’re more novelties than delicacies, but are definitely unique to this area. Otherwise, look for what you expect from your local diner: bottomless coffee, hearty breakfasts and club sandwiches. The atmosphere is the lack of atmosphere: it’s bare bones, retro, and open-air (as in, without air conditioning). The servers are informal and manage to be brisk yet slow at the same time, but you’ll get a big dose of a true local specialty, served every which way, and loads of local character (if not charm). This café is so committed to feeding its regulars, it’s never been closed an entire day since opening (including after hurricanes).
