Plan to reserve in advance if you want a spot at Earth, which serves reasonably priced upscale comfort food with enough glam to draw crowds of well-heeled locals from nearby Rosedale. At the lounge and bar area you may nosh on small plates, such as pork belly with mole vinaigrette, headcheese made from pig parts or elk tartare topped with a quail egg. The bustling main restaurant with its muted earth tones, wood floor and open kitchen has a touch of elegance. The experience makes for a night on the town, yet it is relaxed enough to drop by in jeans for a quick bite, too. Ontario-raised meats are offered by the ounce and are cut to order: Wellington Country rib-eye, Perth Berkshire pork or Haldimand lamb rack, for example. Competent cooking means the fish---be it local rainbow trout, Lake Huron walleye or black cod---is tender and moist. Flatbreads from the wood-burning oven come topped with interesting options, like suckling pig and boudin noir. Shepherd’s pie is built from tender venison and roasted root vegetables, topped with mash and served in a cast-iron pan. Desserts include inventive cheddar cheese ice cream atop an apple crumble. The wine list, well-stocked with Canadian labels, is affordably priced.
