Family Meal Restaurant Review: In the past few years, chef Bryan Voltaggio has been changing the restaurant climate in his hometown of Frederick with the upscale and pricey VOLT and with the more pedestrian-friendly Lunchbox. Voltaggio has hit a home run with his Family Meal. Located in an abandoned Nissan dealership, this restaurant offers classic American home-style cooking with a few subtle twists: fried green tomatoes topped with candied bacon pecans, and a pimento cheese dip stirred with smoky bacon flavors and served with pickled vegetables. But wait: the kitchen crew takes the classic American burger and turns it into a cheddar-bacon-caramelized onion wonder. If you are looking for something slightly less caloric, try one of the salads, such as the tuna with seared fish accompanied by avocado slices and a hard-boiled egg. For beverages, there are standard milk shakes and an adult version laced with alcohol --- flavors rotate. All patrons should save room for dessert, and if the classic lemon meringue pie with blueberry compote and ice cream is offered, snap it up. There’s ample parking, something that Voltaggio’s other two restaurants lack.
