THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Firefly Grill & Wine Bar Restaurant Review

: This North County restaurant offers upscale seasonal American food and value wine --- more than 30 choices by the glass change weekly, so it's a good place to expand one's wine palate. The menu includes dishes like a tapas trio (andouille sausage, marinated Spanish olives and bacon-wrapped dates) and filet mignon bites served on a bed of mashed potatoes and topped with a strip of melted Brie. Entrées such as Kobe-style top sirloin with lobster mashed potatoes, or braised short ribs with white beans will appeal to carnivores, while truffle mushroom risotto is a tasty option for vegetarians. Happy hours feature wine flights and nibbles from grilled flatbread with sun-dried tomato tapenade, kalamata olive tapenade and fried goat cheese, to pan-seared crab cakes. Desserts are a highlight, especially the warm brioche bread pudding with mixed berry compote and vanilla bean gelato, ideal with a glass of Tokaji Aszu.

Chef has poor standards, most disgusting steak ever!
by SammySanDiego on Sun Jun 22, 2008 10:01 pm
We had reservations for a party of 4 during restaurant week. Even though our reservation was made well in advance, and confirmed ahead of time, we still waited 20 minutes before being seated.
3 out of 4 people in our party ordered the "grilled black angus new york strip steak in a port wine reduction", which we all ordered MEDIUM RARE. One person received a medium rare steak, one person received a medium-well steak, and I received a medium steak with a 1/4 inch layer of charcoal covering the top. None of the other people received a steak with a layer of charcoal on the steak.
When the server returned to check on us, and asked if the steak was cooked correctly, I politely and apologetically told her that my steak was burnt (And we're talking this tasted like kingsford charcoal it was so badly burnt). She took it back to have the chef cook a new steak, and what I received back was even worse than the first one!
It was extremely WELL DONE, dry, and tough as shoe leather. I ate one bite and almost choked because it was so incredibly disgusting and inedible. I can't believe how poor the chef's standards are that he would serve a steak to any customer in that condition! This was truly the WORST steak I have ever had at a restaurant in my entire life. I was equally shocked, that even though I didn't eat any my steak - I only ate the carrots and potatoes - the manager and server didn't try to make things right.
I would NOT recommend this restaurant to anyone, ever. Please don't waste your money. And all of this was during restaurant week - when they are TRYING to ATTRACT business, so their standards should be the highest.
