The Tuscan-style food, service and décor all appeal, but its cabaret really sets Germano’s Trattoria apart from its Little Italy peers.

What makes Germano’s Trattoria a Little Italy standout? Is it the food? Could be; Germano Fabiani is from Tuscany, Italy’s culinary capital, and his menu features homemade pasta and such regional specialties as marinated grilled calamari, osso buco with mushroom and saffron risotto, and bongo bongo (addictive chocolate-topped cream puffs). Is it the service? Sure. The servers are attentive and know their stuff, and we’ve always been treated well here. Is it the décor? That, too. The brick-lined rooms, decorated with Belle Epoque posters and Renaissance-style frescoes, are cozily romantic. But what really sets Germano’s apart is its upstairs cabaret. The performance series, which began in 2008 as a way to showcase local up-and-comers, now features both homegrown and nationally-known jazz, operatic, popular, chamber, world music and theatrical ensembles and soloists. Performances happen Thursdays through Sundays; there is a modest cover charge and a special menu.
