Many of the city’s most celebrated Vietnamese restaurants are located in the Little Vietnam area of Midtown, but Green Bamboo may be the best place for traditional fare outside the 240-loop. The ambience---low-lighting, bamboo wood décor---is definitely classier than at most of the aforementioned storefront joints. The menu is heavy on pho, the Vietnamese noodle soup, with more than ten varieties available. The pho ga, a white chicken noodle soup, is appropriate when you’re feeling a little under the weather, and the bun bo hue, sliced beef in an aromatic broth, is good any day. Vegetarian selections include a curry tofu and a spicy lemon grass tofu dish cooked with onions, among others. There’s even a kids’ menu with such offerings as chicken fried rice and beef noodle soup. All desserts are made in-house, including the fresh mango pie. The small wine list offers selections from California, Italy, Chile and Australia.
