Gymkhana Restaurant Review:

Go colonial at this smart Mayfair Indian restaurant that takes the British Raj style as inspiration. Start with a classic Indian punch at the downstairs brass bar. You can eat in the open-plan area but it’s more fun in the inner room, which has dark wood paneling, brown leather banquettes, marble tables and rattan chairs, with photographs of former polo teams and Punch sketches on the walls. There are glass wall lamps from Jaipur and hunting trophies from the Maharaja of Jodhpur. The main menu is divided into sections like “Kebabs & Tikkas” that proposes such dishes as Kasoori chicken tikka with a salad of sprouting moong, cucumber, tomato and onion; or quail kebab with pickled green chilli chutney. “Game & Chops” run from pepper fried wood pigeon to tandoori Guinea fowl breast and leg with green mango chat and mint coriander chutney. Among “Curry & Biryani,” go for the chicken butter masala or suckling pig vindaloo. Sides comprise a select list of five items ranging from wild mustard baby potatoes to spiced okra. For dessert there’s a jaggery and black pepper caramel custard cutting through the taste buds, and a carrot halwa tart with cardamom malai providing a most satisfying end. Various set menus are available and the set lunch is a steal. Enthusiastic and professional waitstaff is dressed in smart Nehru jackets.
