| In a restored 1940s estate home, Hacienda on Henderson serves typical Tex-Mex fare such as fajitas, enchiladas and burritos as well as some surprises such as “Hippie Tacos,” made with grilled portobello mushroom and squash. Service can be hit-or-miss, but sitting alongside the Mexican tile fountain on the 2,000-square-foot dining patio, it’s fairly easy to adopt a laid-back, Southern Hemisphere attitude. The many signature drinks also aid in relaxation, but beware---the house-infused jalapeño and habanero tequilas are not for wimpy drinkers who might be better off trying the pineapple or strawberry varieties. The short rib tacos are a favorite specialty dish, delivering tender chunks of meat flecked with cilantro and chopped onion and wrapped in homemade corn tortillas. The side dish of fluffy Spanish rice almost stands on its own, but some entrées are surprisingly bland and lacking in both texture and flavor. However, the hip Henderson Avenue location and inexpensive specialty drinks go a long way toward an overall agreeable dining experience. |
