THIS RESTAURANT IS CLOSED Hamlet Bistro Restaurant Review:
Chef Raul Schmalzbach has quite the pedigree---he apprenticed at Deux Cheminées, opened Striped Bass with Alison Barshak and worked with Jim Coleman at The Rittenhouse hotel for eight years. But when it came time to open his own place, the chef opted for a storefront in West Mount Airy. There’s nothing stuffy about Hamlet Bistro, with its sky blue tin ceiling, colorful artwork and bluesy soundtrack. But while there’s a neighborhood vibe, this is clearly more than a typical BYOB. The menu includes creative and well executed dishes such as shrimp and scallop dumplings with a soy and fig sauce; pecan-crusted tilapia with vegetable risotto; and an updated take on traditional comfort food with turkey meatloaf served with greens and a crock of mac ‘n’ cheese. Desserts such as a fresh fruit crisp and chocolate brownie sundae strike the perfect sweet ending.
