Hix Mayfair Restaurant Review

: Mark Hix was consultant chef when Brown’s Hotel reopened after a refurb, so it’s logical that his name is now over the door. The restaurant remains wood-paneled and rather staid, though the artwork on the walls, including Tracey Emin’s pink neon ‘I loved you more than I can love” stands pride of place over the mantelpiece. It’s symptomatic of the complete overhaul with Hix bringing his brand of modern British thinking to the kitchen, ably helped by Lee Streeton. Fresh, seasonal British produce have always been Hix’s hallmark and the menu swings along with the likes of spelt with a Burford Brown egg and ramsons, and steamed early season asparagus with hollandaise as starters. One may also encounter poached fillet of sea bass with cockles and sea kale, and wild rabbit with chorizo and hedgerow garlic pie --- and don’t forget the Cornish fish curry. The lunch trolley still makes the rounds, but the meats it dispenses are far removed from the usual silver trolley offerings. The wine list is legendary, strong on the classics with imaginative forays into Australia. You’ll have to book for the set lunch as half of Mayfair seems to go there daily. Set menu 2 courses £27.50, 3 courses £32.50.
