The Hobbit, which has been running pretty much the same since 1972, is one of a handful of OC restaurants that truly combine elegance, tradition and flat-out comfort. Located in a three-story house next to office buildings and strip malls, it is the second home of proprietors Michael and Debra Philippi. During the three-hour dining experience, your friendly hosts seem to be your charming longtime friends. Their seven-course extravaganzas start out in the wine cellar with appetizers around a rustic wood table and hand-picked bottles. Between courses, your hosts invite you to stroll the patio, tour the wine cellar, meet the chef or explore other areas of the restaurant. Everyone gets the VIP treatment here---a main reason why this restaurant is so beloved. Another reason is the food: classic Continental. The menu is always set in advance. Guests can choose between a red meat---filet mignon, veal Cordon Bleu, rack of lamb---or a fish-vegetarian main course. |
