Hojoko Restaurant Review:

Hojoko is a Japanese izakaya (which we think translates to loud rocking tavern) located inside The Verb Hotel in Boston's Fenway neighborhood. It's the second restaurant venture from Tim and Nancy Cushman, owners of the high-end o ya. Hojoko's menu takes it down a notch with a more casual approach, proposing dishes like robata-grilled salmon belly, spicy hamachi rolls, funky chicken ramen, and buttermilk-brined fried chicken wings. Order up a pitcher of Sapporo on tap, or try one of the many cocktails, like the Naruhito made with foie gras akashi white oak Japanese whisky, Cocchi Americano and Benedictine. Traditional potstickers are made even better when combined with shrimp, pork and a foie gras-umeboshi sauce. There are some offerings for adventurous diners, such as salmon belly fins, crispy calves brains and head-on crispy shrimp with black truffle salt, but less daring eaters can nosh on a rich chuck and Wagyu short rib cheeseburger or bacon-wrapped smoky hot dog stuffed with pickled jalapeño and American cheese. Instead of opting for a scoop of ice cream dessert, we recommend finishing your visit off with a frozen Japanese Caucasian made with vodka, cold brew coffee, condensed milk and coffee brandy.
