| Lisa Spooner and Kevin Clark fixed up a long-established spot and were determined to take the “meat-and-three” to the next level, producing it and classic Southern breakfast with a steady eye on quality and locally produced materials. The restaurant is vegetarian and vegan friendly, which means the house-made biscuits are not made with lard (a disappointment to the purist). Served all day, breakfast offers grits that aren’t stone ground (another disappointment) but are nonetheless serviceable, especially the cheese version. The line-up of biscuit sandwiches makes us hungry just reading it, and includes turkey sausage as well as pork and salmon patty, a Southern classic. At lunch, the Sloppy Joe is vegetarian, but carnivores will want to indulge in the house-smoked pork loin, if available. The “Blue Collar Lunch Plate” is a great value at $8, with cornbread, a veggie side and a drink. A pastry chef turns out quality desserts, with choices that vary daily. No alcohol. |
