Hook & Ladder Manufacturing Company Restaurant Review: Hook & Ladder is a contradiction of sorts: contemporary and classic, refined and relaxed, shabby and chic. The name is a nod to the city’s early days of firefighting, while the design pays homage to yesteryear with curio shop finds, including a rotary phone and vintage typewriter. Elements of modernity are peppered throughout, including the ubiquitous flat-screen TV and a ceiling swathed in taupe fabric. The menu meets the standards of today’s discerning tastes, focusing on inspired dishes made from locally produced ingredients. Starters include a trio of tender house-made sausages --- fennel, apricot and Calabrian chile --- complemented by whole-grain mustard and dried fruit chutney. Entrées include seared day boat scallops, the well-cooked morsels topped with peppery arugula and tangy Meyer lemon risotto. Desserts are also creative, including the brown butter almond sugar cake, served with Merlot-poached pear and cranberry compote. Those looking to indulge can partake in a number of artisan cocktails, including the Whistle Blower, with vodka, grapefruit juice and hibiscus syrup, and the Boatswain, with rum, orgeat syrup and fresh mint.
