Hungry Mother Restaurant Review

: Alon and Rachel Munzer, who developed a following at their Bay Village breakfast spot Rachel's Kitchen, have joined forces with talented chef Barry Maiden to open this intriguing, well-thought-out hybrid near the Kendall Cinema. The food is an arresting blend of Dixie comfort and refined French technique, as reflected in the menu's tapas-size bites "to tide you over." Down-home deviled eggs dressed with crisp bacon and the more European canapé of beef tongue on toast are good preludes of what's to come. Shrimp and grits, another Southern-inflected, etouffée-like sauté atop grits with real corn flavor, share space on the appetizer menu with a composed mesclun salad. Entrées show a similar alternation of Gallic sophistication (a standout roast chicken) and rustic Southern charm (cornmeal-crusted catfish with collard greens). The full bar features a diverse list of original cocktails, an eclectic and affordable wine list, and a selection of craft brews fit for a beer snob. The odd but successful union of Euro and Yankee style continues at the table (good flatware, beverages served in Mason jars) and in the hospitality (ultra-friendly servers and a low-key, solicitous sommelier).
