| The atmospheric Aztec Theater, restored and geared toward tourists, struggles to find an audience while its downstairs neighbor, the Iron Cactus, appears to be thriving. Could more than 100 tequilas have something to do with IC’s drawing power? We suspect so and suggest starting with a flight of silver or reposado tequilas paired, perhaps, with the ahi ceviche. The main menu, however, is somewhat hit-and-miss. Gulf Coast crab cakes are more-or-less safe, but somehow the kitchen has managed to make most chilies relatively mild---a trick it's perfected in the chile relleno rustico. We also think we’d prefer to take our fine tequila neat, not as tequila-ginger glazed breast of chicken. But we find Yucatan fish tacos entirely appropriate waterside; they’re tequila-marinated and served with a lime-butter sauce. Outdoor seats in the shade of stalwart cypresses offer some of the river’s best people-watching possibilities, and attractive happy-hour specials add to the entertainment potential. |
