| Jasper White's mammoth homage to New England seafood in Cambridge sets the kitschy stage for this Back Bay branch. Sure enough, with its ersatz rustic décor and rollicking raw bar, it’s only slightly less campy than the original. Its common-denominator menu lists more than enough choices to please foodies, townies and tourists alike. Still, as you'd expect, even White can only be so consistent when serving hundreds a night. The signature pan-roasted lobster still rocks. Clambakes are a blast. But many a lowbrow fried item comes out soggy and erratically seasoned, while the highfalutin’ counterparts suffer from lack of attention to detail. Bottom line: Just like the seaside shacks it emulates, this place is about the experience---salty, sassy and over-the-top. |
