Strike up a conversation with the regulars queued up at Joe Pizza, and you may be surprised to discover how many of them aren't here for the namesake item, although the New Haven-style brick-oven pies are reliably tasty. They range from the simple pepperoni, which has an extra spicy kick, to a white pie topped with goat cheese, roasted red peppers, spinach, artichokes, garlic and crunchy toasted almonds. Still, once some kind stranger fills you in on the eggplant fries --- crisp, hot wedges sprinkled with grated Romano and served with marinara for dipping --- you'll be hard-put to resist pairing them with a beer or glass of wine. Even the meatball salad is enough for a meal. And when you see that the enormous burgers are just $8.95 including a choice of 16 free toppings, your pizza craving may suddenly dissipate.
