John Barleycorn Restaurant Review: Dark and a little mysterious, this former speakeasy was built in 1890 by an Irish cop. With a fifties kind of allure (provided that's your thing) and a laid-back crowd, it’s a neighborhood joint that folks like having around. They've been doing the burger thing for decades, so they have it down pat. Thick and juicy, the patty is constructed of choice ground-round, and it plain tastes good. But you’ll also find surprises like a Mediterranean salad with kalamata olives, feta cheese and grape tomatoes. Nightly specials add to the menu mix. Also located at 3524 N. Clark St., Chicago; and 1100 American Lane, Schaumburg.
