 With its connection to the classic La Grotta Buckhead, La Grotta at Ravinia must live up to high expectations. With its open kitchen, reasonable noise levels and garden views, Ravinia is as open and suburban as the original is private and urban. While the service is not as sleek as in Buckhead, it is sharper and more professional than at most suburban restaurants. Chef Michael Connolly's menu is less sophisticated but still expansive, offering trattoria-style Italian specialties like veal Mediterranean, a great pasta sampler, traditional tiramisu and panna cotta. Risotto is flavorful, but being a bit pre-cooked, lacks the desired al dente texture. A lovely cream of asparagus soup would be much better if served hot, but the flavor is splendid. Rarely seen, the beef paillard is tender and flavorful, with its dab of Gorgonzola butter. The wine choices are primarily Italian, with something for every taste and budget. Enjoy La Grotta at Ravinia for what it is: a different Italian restaurant with its own personality, menu and ambience.
