 La Tavola Trattoria Restaurant Review: La Tavola, meaning "table" in Italian, is a cozy little trattoria, with booths, a bar and an open kitchen flanking the room. Comfort food reigns, from classic rabbit ragù on strozzapreti to zuppa di pesce among the mains. If a free-form lasagna is among the special offerings, it's sure to be a good choice. Mains come correctly accompanied by fresh sides chosen to highlight each dish, and presentations are simple. The roast chicken---a half bird---will rival your mother's best, and fish and seafood are always cooked just to done. Braised veal is a fine choice in cold weather. Brunch dishes range from the classic frittata to poached eggs and Italian sausage with tomato sauce on soft polenta--make that Italian for grits. For dessert, we favor the panna cotta. Frequent wine programs make this a destination for wine aficionados, especially for those devoted to Italian wines, which have a serious presence on the list. The half bottles list is well-considered. Better glassware would serve the patrons and the wines, taking the dining experience up a major notch. |
